In this article written by Ann Taylor, we will see how you can use sliders to promote your business, and review which ones will do best with PrestaShop

An online shop slider is no longer a gimmick, agree? Probably this is the reason you still don’t have it on your PrestaShop website. A slideshow is a traditional attention-grabbing tool, various types of which are constantly improved with new great features. A traditional tool with a lot opportunities, which very often becomes a kind of organic marketing channel for promoting your best or pushing underselling products. Think of it, there are no chances it can have a bad influence on your traffic and sales.

It’s a not a big task to build a catchy slider and track right visitors to the right products, mostly all types of a PrestaShop slider can do that, but still each one has its own features, functions, and, of course, pricing. If you create a slider with a special tone and style, it can have a power of a well-written nifty word helping you engage much more people. And engaging people often lead to sales. Probably it’s hard to make a completely different exclusive slider, but a bit of personalization, attractiveness and your of course quality products are your best weapon.

How to achieve the best results in building a slider with PrestaShop module? Good question. I’d like to give some humble tips, hope they’ll sound fresh for you:

Images. Slider is a gallery of images. Try to make it a kind of art gallery, namely, reduce useless elements. What does that mean? What’s really interesting in product images, they never lie and never say the truth, it’s your chance to be more genuine and open to your customers: risk to show only images or even a slider in a full-screen mode, where the photos are presented in close-up details. They can even go without additional description and compelling calls-to-action, so the visitors are curious to go to the product’s page and find all important info about it. Though it should not be applied to the announcements of deals, offers and sales, where text messages are the most important.

Ads. Don’t advertise too much, people are not interested in ads, they are interested in particular products and want to know more details about it: instead of saying ‘superb belt’ you can better put some useful info about it in short: brand name, material, design, uniqueness, etc. (a quick hint: the best description of your products and services can be found among positive customer feedbacks!).

Quantity. Yes, you want to sell as more products as possible. But that should not mean putting 20 images into one slider – it can load for a long time or even freeze on some devices. Limit it to 5 – 7 slides. You still have a lot of abilities to create several sliders and put it on different pages or simply replace some slides in your main slider from time to time to monitor which ones have higher conversion and product sales.

Hope that helps. Let’s now revises some of the available popular&fresh PrestaShop slider modules that come with some standout features.

In this quick tip we will see how to fix the ‘unable to save settings’ issue concerning the Prestashop slider (homeslider)

Many users have reported not being able to save any kind of setting in the Prestashop slider configuration, using Prestashop 1.6. I decided to investigate the issue a bit further and found out it’s due to multiple entries in the ps_configuration table. How to deal with them? I tried modifying options myself, and here is what I came up with, ps_configuration table:

As you can see, the highlighted entries are duplicated, but represent the options I set for the slider. They read 1 under shop_id, while others all have NULL. It’s a total mess, considering this is what happens right after resetting the module. So, being the entries there, why are they not displaying, or have any effect? It’s due to the shop id.

The cleanest way is to re-gain access to the back office configuration, by modifying the homeslider.php file directly. First, we need to re-gain control in the front office. Open homeslider.php located at modules/homeslider, then find the following:

 $slider = array(
 'width' => Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_WIDTH'),
 'speed' => Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_SPEED'),
 'pause' => Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_PAUSE'),
 'loop' => (bool)Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_LOOP'),
 );

As you can see, there is no reference to any shop id or group, and that causes the configuration table to return the first entry matching that name. Let’s add both:

 $slider = array(
 'width' => Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_WIDTH', null, $this->context->shop->getGroup(), $this->context->shop->id),
 'speed' => Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_SPEED', null, $this->context->shop->getGroup(), $this->context->shop->id),
 'pause' => Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_PAUSE', null, $this->context->shop->getGroup(), $this->context->shop->id),
 'loop' => (bool)Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_LOOP', null, $this->context->shop->getGroup(), $this->context->shop->id),
 );

Save and test the front office, it should be reflecting the latest changes. That said, our back office still displays wrong values. If it’s not a big deal for you, you can simply get away with the previous fix only.

But if you really care about the back office values, then there is another method to amend: getConfigFieldsValues. Locate the following:

 return array(
 'HOMESLIDER_WIDTH' => Tools::getValue('HOMESLIDER_WIDTH', Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_WIDTH')),
 'HOMESLIDER_SPEED' => Tools::getValue('HOMESLIDER_SPEED', Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_SPEED')),
 'HOMESLIDER_PAUSE' => Tools::getValue('HOMESLIDER_PAUSE', Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_PAUSE')),
 'HOMESLIDER_LOOP' => Tools::getValue('HOMESLIDER_LOOP', Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_LOOP')),
 );

You will notice there is a default value there, which should reflect the last submitted one, so why is it not displaying? Because, “smartly”, the page is refreshing after updating the slider options. Therefore, let’s apply the same fix we used above:

 return array(
 'HOMESLIDER_WIDTH' => Tools::getValue('HOMESLIDER_WIDTH', Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_WIDTH', null, $this->context->shop->getGroup(), $this->context->shop->id)),
 'HOMESLIDER_SPEED' => Tools::getValue('HOMESLIDER_SPEED', Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_SPEED', null, $this->context->shop->getGroup(), $this->context->shop->id)),
 'HOMESLIDER_PAUSE' => Tools::getValue('HOMESLIDER_PAUSE', Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_PAUSE', null, $this->context->shop->getGroup(), $this->context->shop->id)),
 'HOMESLIDER_LOOP' => Tools::getValue('HOMESLIDER_LOOP', Configuration::get('HOMESLIDER_LOOP', null, $this->context->shop->getGroup(), $this->context->shop->id)),
 );

And that settles it!

I coded this module a while ago, but decided to publish it only now. In the meantime, Prestashop 1.5 came out so I also made it compatible with the latest Prestashop version. Yep! An of course, it works with Prestashop 1.4 too. If you’re interested, watch the video below to see how to install and use it.

Hey fellows! I’m proud to announce that my new Prestashop module called “Nemo’s Prestashop Slider” (pretty selfish, huh?) is finally available in the store. You can find it here:

Prestashop Modules store – Nemo’s Prestashop Slider

Live demo: here

Here is a short video on how to configure the module, with a brief explaination of its functionalities

Prestashop Module: Nemo’s Prestashop Slider Screencast

Subscribe Post Scriptum's Youtube Channel

Now, what does this module do? As the name suggests it’s a full featured slideshow module for our favorite e-commerce software. It will allow you to create a fancy carousel for your shop, with the ability to add full html content in captions.

So, it will be no problem if you want to change the text on your ad because it’s not effective as it should. You will not need to go back and edit the base image! You can go to th modules page, and edit the content of the slide. Nothing more! PLUS the content is fully translatable. Oh-yeah. I don’t know of any other slider for prestashop with this functionality (or maybe i’m just plugging myself :)).

I’ve based the module on the known Skitter Slider jQuery Plugin. So, credits for the animation and sliding stuff go to Thiago S. F.

But that’s just scratching the surface. The carousel also comes with a secondary slider in the lower lower portion, where you’ll be able to add any of your products, categories, manufacturers or suppliers. If you ever wanted to showcase a list of your brands like they do on play.com (bottom of the page), you’ll now be able to do it without effort. The only thing you’ll have to do will be adding the item id in back office, choose an item type, and click add. The module will take care of the rest, like setting up the proper name, according to the current language, grab an image (you’ll have to create a new image type called “band” before doing this), and set up a link to the corresponding page. Cool, huh?

Plus, you can also use this place to showcase your best products, or categories… or whatever!

The “Band” slider is powered by the Stepcarousel script of DynamicDrive.

So, if you need a slider module for Prestashop which is cheap enough, and extremely powerful and customizable, just head over to the store and grab it! For the first week it will be only 39,90 euros, then the regular cost will be 49,90.
